Will back in action at legendary Spa-Francorchamps this weekend
Will Palmer will return to racing action this weekend (24/25 September) in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 at the legendary Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium, after being forced to miss the recent Northern European Cup (NEC) round at the Nurburgring due to illness.
The 19-year-old currently sits inside the top-10 in the overall Eurocup standings and will be aiming to make further progress up the order with just four races remaining, with two this weekend on the famed 4.35-mile circuit in the Ardenne Forest.
Last time out at the Paul Ricard Circuit in France, Will claimed his best Eurocup result of the season, with a brilliant drive to third in the opening encounter of the weekend. Qualifying on the front-row, he briefly led the race through the first few corners but lost ground when he was pushed wide by Harrison Scott. Nevertheless, the 2015 BRDC Formula 4 Champion regrouped and pushed Scott and second-placed man Lando Norris all the way to the chequered flag to record his maiden podium finish in the category.
Will was set to compete in the penultimate round of the NEC at the Nurburgring in Germany last weekend, but the R-ace GP driver was sidelined from the meeting owing to illness.
The Southwater racer has gained plenty of experience on the challenging Spa circuit, which hosts the penultimate Eurocup round of 2016, this year, having competed on the Belgian track in both Northern European Cup and the BRDC British Formula 3 Championship. A challenging weekend in NEC saw Will unable to make the start of race one before a first-lap clash forced him into an early retirement in race two. The British F3 weekend went much more smoothly for the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award winner though, as he qualified on pole position for the third and final encounter before claiming a podium finish in third.
After practice on Friday, the 30-minute qualifying session for race one will take place at 11:10 (10:10 BST) on Saturday before the first encounter follows on the same day, with lights out at 14:56 (13:56 BST). Sunday's action begins with qualifying at 09:00 (08:00 BST) which sets the grid for race two, which will get underway at 11:16 (10:16 BST).
