Will Palmer completes maiden GP3 weekend with P13 after brave tyre gamble
Will Palmer claimed an impressive 13th position in the second GP3 Series race of his debut weekend at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, after a late charge up the order on slick tyres, on a damp morning in Spain.
Starting from 18th on the grid in his MP Motorsport-prepared Dallara GP3 machine, Will was the only driver on the grid to start with dry weather slick tyres.
Track conditions were treacherous early in the race with the cars throwing up spray on the warm up lap, and Will lacked the same traction off the start-finish line as his rivals on wet tyres. Consequently, he dropped to the tail of the field by the first corner, but he made the most of issues for other drivers to sit 17th when the safety car was deployed for an incident involving Pedro Piquet.
Tricky wet conditions persisted in second half of the race as certain parts of the track dried slower than others. Indeed, Will was able display impressive pace in certain parts of the lap, but the middle sector remained extremely slippery.
Another safety car for an incident followed on lap 10 after Gabriel Aubry went off, and Will was able to rise as high as 15th after the race restarted once again.
The safety car made its third appearance of the morning late in the race, and returned to the pits with just one racing lap remaining.
The BRDC Superstar thrust himself straight into the action during the one-lap shoot out at the close, gaining two positions to secure a 13th place finish.
Will leaves Spain with an 18th place and 13th place finish to his name, after a late agreement to join the GP3 Series with MP Motorsport.
