Will Palmer makes GP3 race weekend debut with 18th in free practice

Will Palmer set the 18th fastest in the opening free practice session of maiden GP3 Series weekend in clear conditions at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain this morning (Friday).  

Will's best time of 1m34.486s was just 1.5s off the fastest time in the session, an impressive effort considering his limited pre-season preparation after joining the new-to-GP3 MP Motorsport team.

Will featured at the sharp end of the scoreboard during the early exchanges, before sinking to the foot of the order as he pitted whilst others made the most of improving track conditions.

A red flag for an incident involving Diego Menchaca halted the session with just over nine minutes to go, and prevented Will from improving immediately upon his return to the track.

The session resumed again with six minutes remaining, although further attempts to improve were postponed by a scheduled test of Virtual Safety Car technology ahead of the season opener.

Will improved late on to rise to 14th in the order, before an eventual 18th place finish.

Will's GP3 qualifying debut will take place at 16:50 (GMT+1) this afternoon, ahead of races on both Saturday (9:15) and Sunday (9:25).
