Successful first Formula Renault test of 2016 for Will
Will Palmer got his first taste of on-track action in 2016 as he undertook two days (21/22 February) of testing in his Formula Renault 2.0 machine at Motorland Aragon in Spain. The 2015 BRDC Formula 4 Champion took to the 5.34-km track with his R-ACE GP team and completed 171 laps combined over the course of Sunday and Monday, showing good pace to finish ninth overall on the first day of running and 16th on the final day of the test.
In sunny conditions, Will turned his first laps of the new season on Sunday morning as 24 other drivers joined him on circuit. The Southwater racer racked up the second most number of laps in the morning session, with a total of 47 falling just two short of American David Porcelli, and posted the sixth fastest time with a 1m55.715s lap.
The afternoon brought more valuable running for Will and last year's McLaren Autosport BRDC Award winner completed another 41 laps to take his total for the day to 88, with his morning time proving good enough for ninth fastest overall and the fourth quickest rookie.
Wet weather greeted all the teams and drivers on Monday morning
and Will made the most of the conditions to gain valuable running
in the damp, appearing in the top-five for the early part of the
session before slick tyres were called for. He eventually completed
36 laps before lunch with a fastest time of 1m57.631s.
The final running of the first test of the season finished with
Will completing 47 laps, taking his total to 83 for the day, and
ending with a best time of 1m56.169. The next pre-season test for
Will is at Paul Ricard in France on 4/5 March.
Will said: "It was great to start testing again after a long
winter break. Over the two days I managed to settle back into the
Formula Renault after having not driven it since the Silverstone
round of Eurocup last year. It was good to get some experience of
both wet and dry conditions and I'm now looking forward to getting
some more mileage at Paul Ricard next week at the second official
test."
