Will qualifies 13th for final race of Eurocup opening weekend

Will Palmer qualified in 13th position for the third and final race of the opening Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 weekend of the 2016 season, held at Motorland Aragon in Spain. The 19-year-old posted a lap time of 1m55.862s in his R-ace GP machine, in what was an extremely tight session.

The cars in Group B were the first to hit the track for their 15-minute session, in a reverse from Saturday, and it was race one winner Max Defourny who set the pace for all the Group A drivers to target with a 1m55.488s. As the green light at the end of the pit lane illuminated to signal the beginning of the second part of qualifying, Will, in the second batch of drivers, let a number of minutes elapse before taking to the 3.3-mile circuit with 12m45s remaining.

After two laps spent warming his tyres, the 2015 BRDC Formula 4 Champion posted his first competitive lap time with a 1m56.573s, which initially put him fifth in the group. He improved again on the next circuit, shaving two tenths off his best time to lap the circuit in a 1m56.307s, which, as others found speed, put him in seventh. Lando Norris, race two winner on Saturday, put in a 1m55.294s which bested Defourny's time and thus gave row precedence on the grid to those in Will's Group.

As time ticked down, Will gathered himself for another effort and produced a great lap, a 1m55.862s lowering his personal best significantly. Despite the improvement, he remained seventh in his group, 13th overall, just 0.15s shy of claiming a top-10 grid spot.

Increasing traffic on the circuit meant no times were improved as the clock hit zero and the chequered flag came out. The final race of the weekend gets underway at 11:25 BST.
