Will Palmer set for start of 2016 Eurocup Formula Renault campaign after impressive pre-season
2015 BRDC F4 Champion Will Palmer gets his 2016 season underway this weekend (16/17 April), as the 19-year-old heads to Motorland Aragon in Spain for the opening round of the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 championship. The Southwater-based driver has graduated to racing in European this year with the French R-ACE GP team, and will be looking to carry his impressive pre-season form into the first meeting of the season.
Will has featured amongst the top-10 in nearly every official test leading up to this weekend's opening three races, with the 2015 McLaren Autosport BRDC Award winner finishing eighth quickest, and fifth fastest rookie, in last week's Eurocup test at the same circuit. Will heads into this season designated as a 'rookie' driver in the category, although he has already competed in one Eurocup round, impressing at Silverstone last year, picking up a best overall finish of ninth in the final race which also netted him the top rookie award.
A very talented field of drivers will contest the Eurocup championship this year, with each trying to emulate last year's champion Jack Aitken to claim the 2016 crown. Alongside Will at R-ACE GP is Belgian Max Defourny, who returns for his second year in Formula Renault having finished fourth last year in the Northern European Cup, and Frenchman Julien Falchero. Will's fellow Brits Lando Norris and Harrison Scott have been quick in pre-season testing but, in a highly-competitive championship such as Eurocup, every driver is capable of challenging at the front.
Will said: "The final test went quite well overall. The conditions were quite tricky with huge winds throughout the two days but it was good to see we were never too far from the top. Looking ahead to the first race this weekend, my goal will be to have three solid races scoring good points in each to build a strong foundation for the rest of the year."
Qualifying ahead of the first round of the season gets underway at 8:35 GMT on Saturday with race one following at 12:00 GMT and race two at 17:35. Sunday qualifying, which sets the grid for the final encounter of the weekend, starts at 08:00 with lights out to start the last race at 11:25.
Alongside his Eurocup commitments, the BRDC Superstar will also contest the Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup this year, which gets underway at Monza in Italy on 23/24 April.
