Damage compromises final Eurocup race at Motorland Aragon for Will
Damage sustained on the opening lap of the final Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 race at Motorland Aragon in Spain limited Will Palmer to a 20th place finish on Sunday. Having qualified 13th, the 19-year-old was battling hard in the mid-pack, but was unable to show his true pace as he picked up damage at the hairpin on lap one and was forced to fight a defensive race for the rest of the encounter.
Sunny conditions greeted the 23-car Eurocup field for the final race of the weekend and Will was looking to follow up on a strong result in race one, as he cut through the field to take sixth and step on to the rookie podium in second place.
As the lights went out, he held position off the start and few the first few corners before dropping a place to 14th through the middle sector. As he fought to regain track position, contact was made with another drive at the hairpin, forcing the 2015 BRDC Formula 4 Champion wide and resulted in him rejoining in 18th.
Despite his damaged R-ace GP car, Will showed determination to hold off the challenges of Tech 1 Racing's Hugo de Sadeleer and Cram Motorsport's Rodrigo Pflucker behind. He set his fastest lap on the fifth tour of the 3.3-mile circuit but a 1m57.245s was not indicative of his true pace. As the race headed into its closing stages, Will was forced to relinquish two places at the hairpin and he came across the line at the end of the 14-lap race in 20th.
Will leaves the first round of the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 season in ninth place in the overall standings with eight points.
