Will Palmer completes impressive Renault Eurocup debut with stellar recovery to P9
Will Palmer completed his debut weekend in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup on the Silverstone Grand Prix with a hard-charging drive from 18th on the grid to ninth by the chequered flag. Despite not having driven the car before this week, this was Will's second top-ten performance of the weekend for the French ART Junior Team, and he finished the race as top rookie.
Qualifying didn't go to plan for Will, meaning that he had to start the race from 18th position, but he immediately set about rectifying that with a storming start. This allowed the Southwater-based driver to quickly rise to 13th position, as he sucessfully avoided any potential hazards on the opening lap.
Will briefly dropped to 14th place on the following tour but, once again, Will bounced back to sit in 11th position by the time the pack crossed the start/finish line at the end of lap three.
Will then faced strong resistance from Norway's Dennis Olsen, a full-time runner in Eurocup, but his patience paid off and he was able to sneak another two positions up the order late on to secure ninth, six positions higher than the next best placed rookie.
Following an impressive weekend on which he consistently troubled a top-ten filled with drivers far more experienced with the Formula Renault 2.0 car, Will commented: "Today was another good day, bouncing back well from a disappointing qualifying to end up ninth and the top rookie. I was also really pleased with the pace in the last race, which was not far at all off the leaders. Overall, I've really enjoyed my weekend in the Eurocup and, given that I only drove the car for the first time on Tuesday, I'm delighted with two top-tens."
Will returns to action in the Duo BRDC Formula 4 Championship next weekend (12-13 September) at Donington Park, for the penultimate round of the season. Will, who has won eight races with HHC Motorsport this season, takes a 74-point lead to the Leicestershire circuit, and could seal the championship with a round to spare.
