BRDC F4 Champion Will to make GP3 test debut in Abu Dhabi
Will Palmer, this year's BRDC Formula 4 Champion, will test a GP3 car for the first time during the championship's official three-day post-season test at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi on 2-4 December. Palmer, who has been shortlisted as a finalist for the prestigious McLaren Autosport BRDC Award, will carry out running with three different teams as he evaluates his options for the 2016 season.
The Southwater-based driver will spend the opening day of the test (Wednesday) with Arden International, a race-winning squad in each of the past five seasons in the Grand Prix support category.
The 18-year-old's second day of testing will come with the French DAMS team, the same squad with which his elder brother Jolyon won the 2014 GP2 Championship. The Le Mans-based outfit will make its first appearance in the GP3 paddock at this test ahead of its full-time introduction to the series next season, which will also see the debut of a new Dallara chassis. DAMS will be running at the test with cars and assistance from Status GP as it awaits the delivery of its new machines.
Will's final day of testing with ART comes courtesy of his recent success in BRDC F4, where a day's GP3 testing comprised one part of a significant prize package for winning the title. Will dominated this year's BRDC F4 Championship, claiming 12 race wins and finishing more than 100 points clear of his nearest rival.
This will be the second time that Will has worked with ART, following a very competitive showing with the French outfit's junior arm during a one-off appearance in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 series at Silverstone earlier in the year.
Palmer's long-standing relationship with Comma will continue throughout the test, with the oil and chemical company's logos appearing on all three cars. Comma has supported Will from his days in the Ginetta Junior Championship through to his BRDC F4 title success this year.
Will said: "I'm delighted to be taking part in all three days of the GP3 test in Abu Dhabi. The car will be a massive step up in performance from what I'm used to in BRDC F4, and the circuit will be completely new to me, but having now done lots of laps on the simulator and watched lots of footage from previous years I feel well prepared to hit the ground running on the first day. It's also great to be making my GP3 test debut with such professional teams - Arden and ART are both proven race and championship winners in GP3, and DAMS' outstanding record in GP2 speaks for itself as it moves into GP3 for the first time."
