Palmer ready to bounce back at Silverstone
Will Palmer is ready to bounce back at Silverstone this weekend (30/31 May) following a challenging three races last time out at Rockingham. The 18-year-old headed into the Duo BRDC Formula 4 Championship's maiden visit to the Motor Speedway as leader in the standings but left in fourth place after an off in race one compromised his entire weekend.
Having been fastest at the pre-Rockingham test, Will traded times with his HHC Motorsport team-mate Harri Newey in qualifying before having to settle for second behind the 16-year-old. However, Newey was unable to take his place on the starting grid when the field headed out for the first race and it was Palmer that led the field away into the banked turn one. He out-braked himself into the turn two hairpin however and skated off the track, along with a number of other drivers, and into retirement.
That put him at the back of the field for race two but he fought back tenaciously to claim fifth place in heavy rain. The result was all the more spectacular as Will had spun early on having made his way up to eighth and had been relegated back to 19th. He then drove superbly to dispatch a whole host of drivers ahead, including the Lanan Racing trio of Rodrigo Fonseca, Chris Mealin and Jack Bartholomew, to move into the top-six before overtaking Indian racer Akhil Rabindra to finish fifth.
Having been unable to set a dry lap-time in the first two races, Will was once again near the back for race three. Through a mixture of retirements ahead and bold overtaking manoeuvres, he made strong progress through the pack and was in 10th when the Safety Car was deployed with just four laps remaining. When the Safety Car peeled off, Palmer passed Sebastian Lanzetti and Jordan Albert to move into eighth, the pair having tangled on the final lap.
His 29 points across the weekend leave him fourth in the championship standings, just one point behind Jack Bartholomew in third with the two other Lanan Racing drivers of Chris Mealin and Rodrigo Fonseca leading the way on 140 points and 126 points respectively.
The Grand Prix circuit at Silverstone will test all 20 drivers in the Formula 4 field to their limits but Palmer already has experience of the track, having raced there twice in the category last year with the Southwater ace claiming a podium finish in round 14 of the 2014 season.
Will said: "I'm really looking forward to Silverstone. It's a fantastic track to drive and one that I went well at last year. Although Rockingham was very disappointing results wise, we once again showed very strong pace so I have no doubts that we will be in a position to take back control of the championship in Northamptonshire."
You can follow all the action from Silverstone through updates and live timing on the official Formula 4 website. The third race of the weekend, held on Sunday at 16:20pm, will be broadcast live on Motors TV in the UK which complements the existing extensive highlights package broadcast on ITV4, BT Sport and around the world.
