Will looking forward to "unique challenge" of Brands GP circuit
Championship leader Will Palmer is looking forward to tackling
the "unique challenge" of the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit this
weekend (1/2 August), as the Duo BRDC Formula 4 Championship heads
to Kent for rounds 13, 14 and 15 of the 2015 season.
It has been a strong start to the year for the 18-year-old, as the
series moves into its second half with a trio of races held on the
majestic 2.433-mile track. "The first 12 races have gone really
well," said Will. "We started strongly at Oulton Park by winning
the first race and, apart from one difficult round at Rockingham,
we have had strong results at each meeting. It has put us in a
strong position for the second half of the year so hopefully we can
continue the good form," he continued.
With a lead of 25 points in the standings over closest rival
Rodrigo Fonseca, Will is looking to extend his advantage at a
circuit he knows well and enjoys: "The Grand Prix circuit is really
good and it is a unique challenge," he enthused. "The only time we
get on the track before qualifying is a half-hour practice session
on Saturday morning so it is all about getting on the pace quickly.
It is a very demanding circuit because it is very high-speed and
there is not much run-off, but that should play to my strengths" he
added.
The teenager isn't discounting the threat from the rest of the
field however: "I should be strong here but I know there will be
plenty of competition from other drivers, particularly from those
who raced here last year, but I am sure the rookies will be quick
too."
With a dozen races left in the season, Will admits his mind may
start turning towards thoughts of his lead in the title race and
how best to tally points, stating: "I think we are getting towards
the point where I have to be looking at the championship. I would
love to win at every opportunity but I can't take any unnecessary
risks as a DNF hurts you so much."
There are still a plentiful number of drivers who have a realistic
chance of winning the title, as he commented: "I think anyone in
the top-six is still a contender but, for them to win, that would
rely on me dropping the ball which I don't intent to do."
With the aim of extending his advantage at the head of the
standings, Will is clear about how he has to approach the Brands
Hatch meeting, saying: "If I can take pole position, which will put
me in a really strong position for the first race. If I can do that
then I think I can have a strong weekend and score a lot of points
from there."
