Victory for Will in wet race three at Snetterton

Will Palmer dominated race three in wet conditions at Snetterton today (Sunday), to extend his lead in the Duo BRDC Formula 4 Championship. The 18-year-old made a stunning getaway from third on the grid to lead into the first corner at Riches and he didn't look back, taking the chequered flag seven seconds clear of his HHC Motorsport team-mate Harri Newey.

Earlier in the day, Will had started seventh for race two as early morning rain had made the surface slick, but not completely sodden. Starting on the wet Pirelli tyres, he was hindered early on as he suffered damage through no fault of his own. Despite this issue, he performed strongly in the early stages and improved one place to sixth before pitting on lap six. He took the opportunity to put on dry tyres, as those who had started the race shod on the slick Pirelli tyres were now posting lap-times significantly quicker than those on wet rubber.

Unfortunately for Will, he rejoined at the back of the field and despite underlining his pace by taking the fastest lap of the race, some two-and-a-half seconds quicker than the next best time, he couldn't improve from 18th. Chris Dittmann Racing's Tom Jackson took the win, having started 16th on the grid, with the Lanan Racing pairing of Rodrigo Fonseca and Jack Bartholomew completing the podium.

Will lined up on the second row of the grid for the third and final race of the weekend on the Snetterton 300 circuit, by virtue of his quickest lap from race one. He sat behind team-mate and pole-sitter Harri Newey, and race one winner Omar Ismail on the grid. The weather closed in moments before the start of the race and a heavy downpour ensured the race would be run in difficult and treacherous conditions.

It did not faze Will however and, as the lights went out to start the race, he made a lightning getaway and shot through the middle of both Newey and Ismail to take first position before the first turn. Newey dropped behind Ismail but soon regained second spot and started chasing down Will.

After four laps, he had closed the gap to the championship leader to just 0.726s but Will was controlling the pace and having fended off the initial pressure from Newey, he posted a string of fastest laps to extend the gap. With two laps remaining, he had opened his lead to 4.017s over 16-year-old Newey.

Heading on to the final circuit, Palmer led by over six seconds and eventually finished 7.011s clear of runner-up Newey, with Ciaran Haggerty crossing the line 15 seconds later to complete the podium.

Speaking after the race, Will commented: "It was one of the best starts I have ever made. Coming from third, I just went straight through the middle and into the lead. I came under a little bit of pressure early on and the conditions were absolutely awful out there. I managed to get into a rhythm however and took the win. There are lots of different wet lines around here so I was searching for them to find the extra grip and it seemed to work quite well."

His victory helps extend his championship lead to 25 points over Lanan Racing's Rodrigo Fonseca, who is an additional 32 points clear of third-placed Tom Jackson.
