McLaren Autosport BRDC Award decision awaits for Will
Following a spectacular 2015 season, Will Palmer will find out if he has won the prestigious McLaren Autosport BRDC Award (MABA) on Sunday night (December 6), with the victor being announced at the Autosport Awards ceremony held at Grosvenor House in London. Will is one of six nominees for the award with the inaugural BRDC Formula 4 Champion Jake Hughes and this year's Autumn Trophy victor Ben Barnicoat also in the running.
Established in 1989, the MABA recognises young British talent, with a prize package including a test drive in a McLaren Grand Prix car and a £100,000 reward for the winner. Former recipients include Formula One World Champion Jenson Button, two-time Monaco Grand Prix winner David Coulthard, and three-time Indianpolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti.
Alongside Palmer, Hughes and Barnicoat, three other drivers have been nominated for the award; MSA Formula drivers Ricky Collard and Toby Sowery, plus Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup Champion Jack Aitken. All six nominees were placed through a series of rigorous tests, including on-track evaluations in a series of different racing cars at Silverstone, interviews in front of a panel of experts and both fitness and simulator tests.
The judges, consisting of BRDC President Derek Warwick, two-time British Touring Car Champion Jason Plato, McLaren's Andrew Kirkaldy and Mark Williams, leading circuit commentator Ian Titchmarsh, Autosport features Editor Scott Mitchell and Motorsport News Editor Kevin Turner, will select the winner which will be the highlight of the evening's proceedings in London on Sunday.
Will enjoyed an exceptional season in BRDC Formula 4, taking 12 wins from 24 races, to wrap up the title with three races still remaining. He also claimed 10 pole positions and 15 fastest laps with HHC Motorsport as he claimed the title in the UK's premier junior single-seater series. He also impressed in a one-off outing in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup series at Silverstone, taking a best finish of ninth and stepping on to the podium as top rookie in the final race of the weekend.
