Victory in race three adds to fine Brands weekend for Will
Following his perfect day at Brands Hatch on Saturday, Will
carried over his fine form into Sunday with a strong fourth-place
in race two adding to his second victory of the weekend, and sixth
of the year, in the final race of the meeting on the Grand Prix
circuit in Kent.
Starting eighth for the reverse grid race two, the first Duo BRDC
Formula 4 action of the day, Will was demoted to ninth on the first
lap but began fighting back immediately as he overtook team-mate
Sisa Ngebulana for eighth and then Ecurie Ecosse Young Driver
Ciaran Haggerty for seventh.
Pole-sitter Chris Mealin was handed a 10-second time penalty for a
jump start which effectively promoted Will to sixth. Setting a
number of fastest laps, and re-breaking the lap record he had set
the previous day, Will closed on fifth-place Rodrigo Fonseca and
passed him with a beautiful move into Druids that had been set up
the corner before at Paddock. Further ahead, Omar Ismail pirouetted
across the track at Sheene while running third and dropped to
seventh, Will moving up to fourth.
He began hauling in the top-three but ran out of time in the race,
eventually finishing just 1.299s behind winner Jordan Albert in a
tight finish.
His lap record pace in the first two races saw Will start from
pole position for race three and he led comfortably into Paddock
Hill Bend from Ismail and Haggerty. By the end of the first lap, he
had opened up a gap of over a second as Ismail came under pressure
from the Ecosse driver.
As the race moved into its middle stages, the 18-year-old got into
a good rhythm and methodically extended his advantage as he looked
in supreme control at the front. He entered the final lap with an
advantage of 5.666s and eventually took the chequered flag 6.563s
ahead of his rivals. Ismail held on to second despite a late charge
from Haggerty, 0.126s separating the two at the line.
Will's sixth victory of the year extends his advantage to 69
points over Rodrigo Fonseca with Chris Dittmann Racing's Tom
Jackson a further 13 points adrift in third.
