Double podium for Palmer in Radical SR1 Cup
Will Palmer enjoyed an excellent debut in the final round of the Radical SR1 Cup. Having driven the car for the first time only on the Friday preceding the event, Will went into qualifying hopeful of taking pole position.
A short downpour of rain just before the session made the track very slippery initially, and Palmer took the advantage in the early stages to go top. As the track dried, seeing laptimes fall significantly throughout the session, a two-horse race for pole emerged between Will and series leader Colin Noble.
However, Noble had gone out at the front of the queue so was able to get one extra lap than Will, which was a huge advantage on such a rapidly drying track, which allowed him to take the two pole positions while Palmer took second place on the grid for both races.
In race one which got underway in dry conditions, Will held position off the start while Colin Noble led the field. After a first lap safety car Palmer set off in chase of Noble but was unable to catch him, despite very consistent laptimes all within two tenths of his best.
Race two was a very different affair, with Will getting an excellent start to take the lead from Colin Noble off the line. An exciting battle between the two followed, With Noble making the pass down the inside at Riches on lap two before Palmer regained the lead at Montreal on that lap with an excellent lunge down the inside.
On lap three, Noble once again got down the inside of Will into Riches and held the inside line into Montreal, forcing the Ginetta Junior race winner to try and get a switch back into Palmers but it didn't come off, leaving Noble to take the win and Palmer to finish second.
Speaking afterwards, Will said "I've absolutely loved racing in the SR1 Cup and I need to say a massive thanks to Radical for giving me the opportunity to compete in it this weekend. The car is fantastic fun to drive; it has a lot of power and the sequential gearbox makes it feel very racey, while the road tyres make it slide around a lot but in a very controllable way. I was very happy to take two second places considering I only drove the car for the first time the day before, and the second race was great fun racing with Colin for the lead!"
