Pole and a podium for Palmer at Brands Hatch
Will Palmer showed great pace throughout the final weekend at Brands Hatch on the Grand Prix circuit, starting with Friday practice in which he was comfortably fastest in very wet conditions.
For qualifying, track conditions were very different to those experienced in practice, with the track now dry. Will initially set the pace, but was constantly swapping places with Ollie Chadwick at the top of the timesheets. In the end Chadwick just took it on the last lap, but a quick second fastest lap for Palmer secured him pole for race two.
Race one was once again dry, and Will held second off the line and then set about chasing after Ollie Chadwick for the lead. However, just as Palmer got close enough to challenge for the lead the safety car came out following a heavy crash for Jack Rawles at Paddock Hill Bend. At the restart, Chadwick got the jump on Will, but undeterred, Palmer chased after him again, cutting the gap slightly each lap, but he ran out of laps in the end, finishing second.
Race two took place in very wet conditions, and Will held the lead from pole. On lap two however, Ollie Chadwick managed to squeeze past into Surtees, and quickly built a gap. Palmer, determined to take a second race win, then picked up the pace and chased him down, and a close battle between the two resulted in Palmer spinning on the slippery track at Graham Hill Bend.
Will recovered to fifth but while making a move on Jamie Chadwick for fourth on that same lap there was contact, with Palmer getting beached in the gravel ending his race.
The season's results have been good enough to secure Will third in the championship, just behind Keith Donegan in second place, with Harry Woodhead taking the championship win, while James Kellett secured the rookie cup.
"Overall I can be reasonably pleased with my weekend; the pace has been very good all the way through, and it was good to take a tenth podium of the season in race one. It was disappointing to end the season as I did, but there are inevitably risks that you take when going all out for a win in the last race, especially given the very tricky conditions.
"I have to say a huge thank you to my team HHC Motorsport for their hard work over the past two seasons, to Ginetta for providing such a great championship and most importantly to my parents and my sponsor Comma for supporting me and helping me get this far."
