Palmer takes stunning victory at Brands Hatch
Will Palmer enjoyed an excellent day at Brands Hatch for rounds five and six of the BRDC F4 Winter Series.
In testing on Friday, although the sessions were untimed Will was very happy with his pace and was confident that he would have a chance of pole come race day. Conditions for qualifying were very different to the day before however, with overnight rain making the track slightly damp.
All the drivers opted for new slick tyres, and from the off Palmer was consistently the quickest as the track improved lap after lap. By about halfway through the session, the track was almost fully dry on the racing line, and the drivers were able to put in very quick times.
A late red flag for Gosia Rdest caused an early end to the session, and with Will having put in a laptime just under a tenth faster than Matty Graham, who qualified second, he secure pole position for the first race in only his second weekend in BRDC Formula 4.
For race one, the track was dry and Palmer managed to maintain the lead off the start just fending off Matty Graham. He then got managed to build up a one second lead by lap six when the safety car came out following a spin for Gosia Rdest at Clearways.
Following a good restart by Palmer he began to come under some pressure from Graham, but put in a series of very quick and consistent laps to take his first single seater victory by 1.5 seconds. Graham finished second with Cook coming home in third.
After setting the third fastest lap in race one, Will would start race two from that position, but a poor getaway meant he fell to sixth off the line, and with overtaking notoriously difficult around the Brands Hatch Indy Circuit he was unable to find a way past Pietro Fittipaldi in front, and finished sixth while his teammate Sennan Fielding took the win after starting from pole.
"I'm really pleased with the way I've adapted to single seaters, and today was amazing to take not my first ever single seater pole and win, and to do it at what is effectively my home circuit, Brands Hatch, was even more special. I've been feeling very confident in the car during testing so it was great to convert that into results today, and hopefully we can challenge for more wins and podiums tomorrow."
