Palmer flies to two fourth places on F4 debut
Will Palmer enjoyed an excellent start to his F4 career in the first round of the Winter Series at Snetterton.
Qualifying took place in wet conditions, with the track getting faster each lap. Will went out near the front and was near the top of the times all the way through the session, with a strong final lap securing him fourth on the grid while Matty Graham took pole position.
Race one saw very similar conditions to qualifying, with Palmer holding fourth after the first lap after fending off Matteo Ferrer. He then set off in chase of Sennan Fielding closing the gap while breaking away from the pack behind.
Despite getting very close at one stage, Will was unable to get close enough but showed great pace and consistency to take the second fastest lap of the race, only a tenth off the fastest, which would give him a front row start in only his second ever single seater race.
Before race two there was heavy rain which made the track very treacherous, especially when combined with the very cold conditions which made it very difficult to get temperature in the tyres.
Initially Will got a very good start from second and went side by side with Falco Wauer for the lead into the first corner, but got squeezed out and dropped a wheel on the very wet grass which caused him to tumble down the order to last.
Following Matteo Ferrer's retirement after the Swiss driver spun at Palmers on the first lap Will was into eighth, and a brave move on Fredrik Johansson around the outside at Coram on the same lap moved him into seventh.
Palmer then lunged Greek driver Dimitris Papanastasiou into Agostini on lap two before keeping a cool head for the rest of the race, not making any mistakes on a very slippery track, which allowed him to capitalise on mistakes for Jake Cook and Falco Wauer and take another fourth place.
"I'm really happy with my F4 debut, two fourth places is a fantastic start and hopefully I can go one better tomorrow and take a podium! I've also been really pleased with the pace shown only just missing out on pole for my second ever F4 race, and even though we had slight setup issue in that race which made the car very difficult to drive I'm confident we can be competitive tomorrow, especially if it dries up!"
Will has another qualifying session and rounds three and four of the F4 Winter Championship tomorrow at Snetterton, and currently sits fourth in the standings.
