Palmer takes superb podium on F4 debut weekend
Will Palmer capped off an excellent debut weekend in Formula 4 with a podium in round four at Snetterton having been on the pace all weekend.
In qualifying for round three it was wet once again, with Will leaving the pits first to get a clear qualifying run with no traffic or spray.
After the first few laps, which were needed to build temperature in the tyres in the very cold conditions, the track began to evolve getting faster each lap, with all the drivers putting their fastest lap in on their last. A strong final lap saw Palmer go fourth fastest just a hundredth off third, meaning he would start race one from fourth on the grid.
The first race was significantly drier than qualifying, but still wet, and Will got a very good start to move into third place, but was shuffled out at Montreal falling to seventh, before benefitting from a spin for Matty Graham following contact with Sennan Fielding at Agostini to move into sixth.
From there on Will had a frustrating race stuck in the dirty air of Pietro Fittipaldi, but unable to find a way past. On the third last lap of the race Palmer tactically backed off to go for a fastest lap, which determines the grid for race two, and put in a time which would give him third on the grid.
However, on the last lap Will caught Fittipaldi once again and went for a move at Agostini, but contact between the two followed which saw him slip to seventh behind Matty Graham.
In race two, which took place in dry conditions, Palmer got a poor start, slipping to fifth from his third place grid slot before lunging past Matteo Ferrer into Montreal. A safety car then followed after Ferrer had a spin after running wide onto the wet grass and couldn't get going again.
After the restart, the top four began to break away from those behind with Will all over F4 race winner Graham for the final podium position, setting the third fastest lap in the process, and managed to pressure him into a mistake on the last lap to seal his first F4 podium in impressive style.
"I'm really pleased with how my first weekend in F4 has gone; we knew we could be competitive after testing on Friday and it was great to see that translate into four competitive races including a podium! Hopefully when we go to Brands in two weeks for the next round I can be even more competitive with more experience under my belt and challenge for podiums or even race wins!
The next and final round of the BRDC F4 Winter Series takes place at Brands Hatch on the 23rd and 24th of November, with Will currently sitting fifth in the standings.
