Palmer denied first win at Thruxton
After taking pole position on Saturday at Thruxton, Palmer's confidence was high heading in to race one with teammate Harry Woodhead starting alongside him.
However, as the lights went out Woodhead got a very good start which meant Will was relegated to second, a position he held until the last corner of that lap, where under great pressure from Keith Donegan Palmer locked the rear brakes and spun, putting him down to last place.
From then on, Will made a superb recovery, passing six cars in two laps to find himself in seventh place, but with a bit of a gap to make up to the next group of cars which was headed by Tom Jackson in third place.
A string of quick consistent laps allowed Palmer to get onto the back of this group, and he then passed Jack Mitchell under braking for Club and capitalised on a mistake by Jack Rawles to move into fifth place.
Ollie Chadwick then had a problem coming onto the last lap, but in passing him Will had lost a lot of ground to Jackson who was now another second up the road, but a very strong final lap allowed Palmer to close up to him.
On the final corner of the race, Will then executed a perfectly timed move to ease past Jackson on the exit, taking the chequered flag six hundredths of a second in front. Meanwhile, Harry Woodhead took the win with Keith Donegan in second place.
At the start of race two Palmer got a much better start from second place to shoot into the lead, and had managed to extend his gap to six tenths by the end of the first lap over the chasing pack. A mistake at the high speed Goodwood corner however then allowed Woodhead back through into the lead.
Will was determined not to let him get away, and stuck with him searching for a way past, taking the fastest lap of the race in the process. Then on lap six Palmer committed to a move on the inside of his teammate, but was squeezed onto the grass in the braking zone and then hit into a spin at the corner, shuffling him down to sixth place, almost five seconds behind the next car.
Some very fast laptimes allowed Will to take fifth on the last lap, but that provided little consolation for what easily could have been Palmer's first win.
"This weekend has been very mixed; Saturday was very good topping both practice and qualifying, but on Sunday the results were slightly disappointing. However, I'm very pleased with my driving in both races, as to come from last to third by the flag was an excellent achievement in race one, and in race two I believe I would had been able to win had I not been spun round whilst going for the lead, but it is good to see the pace is there now so hopefully I can challenge for victory again in the coming races."
Will is next in action on the 7th of June at Oulton Park for rounds seven and eight of the Ginetta Junior Championship.
