Palmer storms to podium at Croft
Going into qualifying on Saturday Will was confident of challenging for pole, however after the session a slight problem was found with the engine, which meant Palmer was unable to fight for the top spot, but after a very strong performance he would still start in fourth place for both races. The engine was replaced overnight, so the Sussex racer was still confident of fighting for victory.
In the first race which took place in dry conditions Will tried out a new start technique; however this backfired, and he was shuffled out into the gravel at the first corner, and although he was able to rejoin in fifth place, he lost his rear bumper in the gravel which made the car very difficult to drive at high speed.
This resulted in a very sideways moment for Palmer on lap two while defending into the very fast right hander of Barcroft, which ultimately left him in eleventh place. From there on Will recovered well to score good championship points with sixth place.
For race two the track was very wet with standing water covering much of the surface. After a decent getaway, Palmer was sandwiched at the first corner and was innocently tapped into a spin, which unfortunately left Josh White with nowhere to go, so there was a big collision between the two.
Will, refusing to give up, got the car going again despite the damage in last place, and after a safety car began picking his rivals off moving his way up the order, feeling the grip very well on the very slippery track, finding himself in fifth going onto the last lap. A superb final effort saw Palmer pass James Kellet and Jack Mitchell to take third on the final tour and with it his fifth podium of the year.
Harry Woodhead once again took both the race wins, with Tom Jackson, Ollie Chadwick and Keith Donegan also featuring on the podium. In the championship, Will remains firmly in second, a position he has held since Brands Hatch.
"This weekend has been mixed; I was very happy with my qualifying effort after seeing the issue with the engine, but was a bit disappointed to only come away with sixth from the first race. The second race was fantastic, with a real mix of emotions after being spun around innocently at the start, but fighting up to third with only a few corners to go on the last lap! At Snetterton in six weeks time, although I will once again be aiming for a win, I have set a target of having two podium finishes without incident, as I see that as the main area to work on going forward."
Will now has a long break before the championship resumes at Snetterton 300 on the 3rd of August for rounds eleven and twelve of the Ginetta Junior Championship.
