Two Poles and a Podium for Palmer at Snetterton
Will Palmer enjoyed a mixed weekend at Snetterton at the eleventh and twelth round of the Ginetta Junior Championship.
Having finished in the top four of every practice session, Will was hopeful heading into qualifying of taking his second pole position of the year. His confidence was rewarded as he managed to edge out the rest of the field in a very closely fought session, with the top four cars separated by less than a tenth. Palmer's second fastest lap was also the fastest, which meant he would start race two from pole position as well.
Race one saw very unexpected conditions, with rain soaking the track just before the cars headed to the grid. Some drivers gambled on a wet setup, hoping the rain would continue, whilst others, Will included, opted not to change setup hoping the rain would pass and the track would dry.
However, the rain continued which meant the track was very wet by the start of the race. Starting from first place, a very slow getaway for Palmer saw him fall to tenth on the run to the first corner. He very quickly fought back through to third though in the difficult conditions, and kept a cool head to take his sixth podium of the year, with Keith Donegan taking the win, ending Harry Woodhead's ten race streak.
Race two took place in dry and sunny conditions, and off the line Will fell to third behind the fast starting Ollie Chadwick and Woodhead; he would soon regain the lead though, executing a stunning move around the outside of both Chadwick and Woodhead at Montreal hairpin on lap three. Unable to break away due to the effects of a slipstream, Palmer had to resist heavy pressure from behind, but was still leading onto the last lap of the race.
As Will defended into the first corner, Jack Mitchell pulled off a good switch back to get to the inside for Montreal, with Harry Woodhead and Tom Jackson following him through. Determined to still get on the podium, Palmer executed a very well timed switch back on Jackson to take third place back at the third last corner. His hard work was all undone at the last corner however, as an over-ambitious move by Jackson forced Will off track relegating him to seventh place at the flag.
"Overall I am happy with my weekend; to take two pole positions in such a close qualifying session was a great achievement, and third in race one was a good result for my championship. Race two was an excellent race, and I was very unfortunate to not have the result I deserved. Hopefully I can finally take a win at Knockhill, which is a track I really like."
Will is next in action on the 25th of August at Knockhill for round thirteen and fourteen of the Ginetta Junior Championship.
