Palmer cruelly denied podium finish at Silverstone

Will Palmer performed extremely well at Silverstone on the weekend, despite officially only recording a seventh and ninth place finish after a five second penalty was applied to his initial third place for exceeding track limits in race two.

In an incredible qualifying session, Palmer was near the top of the timesheets throughout, and was top for the first half of it. With his rivals putting in laptimes in slipstreams, crucial at the circuit due to its long straights, Will fell to third at the halfway stage.

Undeterred, he slipped back to find a toe himself to attempt to reclaim the top spot from teammate Charlie Robertson, who was half a second clear of anyone else. A superb final effort moved him back to second, just seven hundredths of Robertson, with Will also taking second place for race two meaning that HHC motorsport locked out the front row of both races.

In race one, Palmer maintained second off the line, before being tapped into a spin at Luffield on the first lap, shuffling him down to twelth. He was then recovering well and was up to tenth, before Freddie Lee spun Will around and through the gravel at the same corner, leaving him last by some margin.

A series of very quick laps allowed him to catch and pass Elliot Paterson into Brooklands, Freddie Lee with a bold move on the outside of turn two and Tom Jackson and Pepe Massot at Brooklands as well, meaning he finished ninth.

In race two, a good getaway and a very close first corner left the HHC pair of Palmer and Robertson side by side into turn two, with Will seizing the advantage to take the lead of the race. Charlie quickly came back past through at Brooklands on the same lap however, taking Pepe Massot with him meaning Palmer was relegated to third.

On lap three a great exit from turn two saw Will breeze past Robertson and Massot to take the lead once again, but a well timed switch back from Massot on lap four left him down in fourth after Watson and Murray followed him through.

Then after laps of intense racing, Will had an attempt to pass Murray into turn two on the final lap, but the Irishman held on around the outside, and with the five cars of Massot, Watson, Fielding, Murray and Palmer all running side by side heading into Brooklands for the final time, Will was unfortunately positioned on the outside, and came out fifth. But with a great exit from Luffield, he was able to retake what should have been a podium position after passing Fielding and Murray on the run to the line.
However, the stewards deemed Palmer to have exceeded track limits, and he was cruelly handed a five second time penalty, dropping him to seventh.

"It's been an incredible weekend" said Will. "Even though the final results are disappointing, to take a pair of front row starts is unbelievable, though I do feel that the penalty that robbed me of my podium was ridiculous and hugely disappointing after what was a great race. Hopefully I can carry this momentum through to Brands Hatch in two weeks time for the final rounds of the championship, where I aim to finally get on the podium!"
