Sensational third for Palmer in Ginetta Junior Winter series

Will Palmer took a very strong third and two fourth place finishes at Rockingham on the weekend to secure third overall in the three race Ginetta Junior Winter series.

Palmer missed the first three practice sessions on Friday, but made it for the final session, finishing with the third fastest time on his first visit to the track on the new for next year Michelin road tyres.

Come qualifying on Saturday morning however, track conditions had drastically changed after a downpour of rain overnight. With a soaking track, Will took fifth place for both races, happy to finish the session with the car in one piece unlike some others who slipped off in the treacherous conditions.

Conditions were similar in race one, and Palmer got a good getaway to challenge for fourth, but got boxed out on the outside and instead slipped to sixth. He then held position until a safety car period on the first lap for the beached car of Piers Hickin.

The racing got back underway a lap later, and Will eased passed Elliot Paterson at Deene hairpin to take fifth. Andrew Watson then slipped off in the difficult conditions ahead before Basey-Fisher locked up and tangled with Ollie Chadwick at Deene, handing Palmer second behind his teammate Harry Woodhead.

However, a lap later a red flag came out after Jack Finlay hit the wall around the high speed first corner, and unfortunately, due to a count back rule where the positions are taken from the lap before, Will had to settle for fourth place.

In race two which took place in better, but still damp conditions, Palmer got an excellent start from fifth to take second place by the first hairpin of Deene. At the final corner of the lap, a slide onto the start straight cost Will and he slipped to fifth.

With some great racing, including a bold move around the outside at the Piff Paff on both Ollie Chadwick and Elliot Paterson and a very late braking manoeuvre on Oli Basey-Fisher into Deene hairpin, Palmer managed to claim a deserved third place and first ever podium in the series.

For the third and final race, Will once again made a solid start and held third, but this became effectively second after Andrew Watson was handed a ten second penalty for a jump start from the lead.

Palmer then began chasing down Harry Woodhead for the effective lead. However, there was oil down at the Piff Paff, which caught out several drivers including Will, which meant  he slipped down to fifth just off the leading group, though he did manage to chase down and pass Oli Basey-Fisher with a well executed switch back at Deene on the last lap, to take fourth in the race and third overall in the Championship.

"I'm really happy with how this weekend has gone, especially after going in with very little track time compared to my rivals, and I was pleased with my drives in all three races which has given me lots of confidence for next season."
