Weekend to forget for Palmer
Will Palmer ended a very unfortunate weekend at Donington Park for rounds three and four of the Ginetta Junior Championship with two DNFs, following a big crash during Saturday's race one, which wrote off the car, and a technical problem in race two with the spare car.
This followed on from a strong qualifying performance however, as despite qualifying tenth, less than half a second separated Palmer from the pole sitter George Gamble, which was a very credible performance, with the very close times highlighting how fiercely competitive the series is.
In race one, Palmer maintained position off the line, and managed to gain a place during the lap, but was then tipped into a spin by another driver later on in the lap.
By lap two Palmer was closing in on those in front, but a spin for Elliot Paterson at the very fast Craner curves meant Will had to spin off into the grass to avoid hitting him.
The safety car was then brought out due to an incident involving Finlay Ratcliffe. With this being Will's first ever safety car, he found out the hard way the importance of keeping tyres warm during these periods after a spin after the restart on cold tyres.
To round off a very unlucky race, Palmer then rounded the blind, fast turn of Coppice to find Elliot Paterson sideways across the track, following an incident which also involved Pepe Massot and George Gamble. Will was not able to avoid him, and had a high speed crash into the young Scot, which wrote off both cars; the cars of Gamble and Massot were also written off in the incident.
Niall Murray took the win in the race which was red flagged after the crash, with Charlie Robertson finishing second and Sennan Fielding completing the podium.
To get out for the race on Sunday, a spare car was used, but the race was all too short for Will, with the car having a technical problem at the very first corner.
Sennan Fielding grabbed the win from Pepe Massot, who was followed by Andrew Watson.
"Overall this has been a very testing weekend; race one really was a series of unfortunate events, and it was such a shame that we were not able to complete race two, especially after all the efforts of HHC in getting the car ready. I now need to learn from this, put it behind me, and aim for a much better weekend at Thruxton in two weeks time."
Will is next in action at Thruxton for rounds five and six of the championship on the 28th and 29th of April.
